Who makes the decisions?

This page provides useful information about our decision-makers.

The decisions taken at interim orders tribunal hearings and medical practitioners tribunal hearings are made solely by MPTS tribunal members.

The MPTS has approximately 280 tribunal members who are a mix of medical and non-medical (lay) people, appointed through open competition.

Tribunal members make impartial decisions about doctors’ fitness to practise based on the evidence presented to them.

Tribunal members must give reasons for their decisions and they must comply with the relevant legislation and rules that govern our procedures.
