Procedural matters relating to tribunal hearings

Venue

  1. For all types of MPTS hearings, the doctor will have received confirmation of the hearing venue in the notice of hearing sent by the MPTS.

  2. In medical practitioners tribunal (MPT) hearings, the hearing venue will have been decided during the pre-hearing case management stage by the MPTS applying the guidance Deciding how to hold medical practitioners tribunal hearings, and both parties (the GMC and doctor) having had an opportunity to make submissions. Any request to change the hearing venue before the hearing starts will be decided by an MPTS case manager.

  3. If a party requests or an medical practitioners tribunal (MPT) wishes to consider changing hearing venue during an MPT hearing, the MPT should consider the principles relating to changing hearing venue set out in the guidance Deciding how to hold medical practitioners tribunal hearings

  4. Requests for an alternative hearing location (a venue other than the hearing being held virtually or at the MPTS hearing centre) must always be determined by an MPTS case manager who will apply the guidance Holding medical practitioners tribunal hearings at an alternative venue on an exceptional basis. Such requests cannot be decided by tribunals, even if they are raised during the hearing.
